(x+6)(x+2)=60

expand

x^2+6x+2x+12=60

x^2+8x+12=60

minus 60 both sides

x^2+8x-48=0

factor

what multiplies to -48 and adds to 8

-4 and 12

(x-4)(x+12)=0

set each to zero

x-4=0

x=4

x+12=0

x=-12

x=4 or -12
