The fall of the Soviet Union affected the world in the long run by now the choice was not between communism and full capitalism, which allowed for a generation of people to have to practice tacktics to protect themselves from the very real war waging between the two ideologies to a time were a majority of wars is not backed by the large opposite powers, but the destruction of the nations foes ie the Iraqi wars.

It allowed the independent Soviet nations and satellite states to choose democracy over communism.

Apart from Belarus, all other countries that became independent from the USSR rushed to change their systems and to become democratic countries. Also they changed the structure of the economies and turned them into market economies. They also rushed to make alliances with the EU and the USA as they wanted to get into the organizations like the EU and NATO because they had the fear that Russia may try to attack them and annex them.
