Reasons for why colonists came to America

  • Religious Freedom

⇒ Religious groups, such as the Puritans wanted to

establish their religion in a new land, away from dangerous

persecution in England, which although wasn't Catholic at the

time, but still mainly adhered to the some of the Catholic rules

and thus were intolerant of other denominations

  • Economic

⇒ England had developed an unstable economy and as poverty

grew, English citizens chose to venture to the New World as

indentured servants (A person under contract to work for another

person for a definite period of time, usually without pay but in

exchange for free passage to a new country) to start a new life

  • Were forced too

⇒ England had quite a few convicts and thus decided to move

them to America to free up space in the prisons and to make use

of them for their labor

Hope that helps!
