Caused imperialism, people were greedy and wanted to be better than the other, and secret aliances so they didn't know who was with who. Since they were alliances when the other country needed help they other would join, causing it to go global

Answer:

Alliances were so important to WWI because it is what escalated it. The war started as a little argument between Austria/Hungary and Serbia. As they got more mad at each other they called there alliances and those alliances called others and before you know it the whole world was involved minus the US till later.
