How did Gorbachev's policies of perestroika and glasnost relate to the breakup of the Soviet Union?

Answer:

It allowed citizens to clamor for things like better living conditions, more freedoms, and even an end to Communism. So, basically it allowed for a more democratic Soviet Union if you will. Instead of helping the situation, it backfired.
