What is the difference in area between a cookie cut from a cutter that has a diameter of 4 inches and a cookie cut from a cutter with a radius of 3 inches? Round to the nearest tenth.

15.7

Explanation:

Assuming they are circular, just to clarify.

First cutter:

A=pi*r^2

r=d/2

d=4

r=2

pi*2^2

3.14*4

Second cutter:

r=3

pi*3^2

3.14*9

Differences:

3.14*9-3.14*4

3.14*(9-4)

3.14*5

15.7

Notes: I used 3.14 as pi as it does not need to be any longer for rounding to the tenths place. To sum it up, I found the areas of each cutter, assuming that they are circles, then calculated the difference.
