Explanation:

What the page is trying to explain is that-

2×5+8 is not the same as 2×(5+8).

This because in 2×5+8, 2×5=10 and then 10+8=18.

However, when there are parentheses (or brackets), you have to do whatever is in the parentheses first. You can do this by remembering PEMDAS (or BIDMAS for those in the UK).

P- Parentheses

E- Exponents (for example, 2²)

M- Multiply

D- Divide

A- Addition

S- Subtraction

You will need to know that, but for now all you need to know is you always do whatever is in the parentheses first.

This means for 2×(5+8), you must do (5+8) first which equals 13. Then do 2×(13) which equals 26.

The question saying, 'what should you look for in a group?' is referring to parentheses. This is because you must do what is in the bracket together first as a group.

Then it says, 'how do you evaluate an expression if you see a grouping symbol?'. As we know the grouping symbol is parentheses, all you need to do to evaluate the express is do (yes that's right) whatever is in the parentheses and then multiply/divide that by anything outside the parentheses.

Example:

3× (7+8)

Always do (7+8) first which = 15.

Then do 3×(15)= 45.
