3x + 17 = -2x - 13

move like terms (remember to change signs)
3x + 2x = -13 -17

5x = -30

get x to equal to the following
x = -30 / 5

x = -6

Answer:

x = -6

Explanation:

3x + 17 = -2x - 13

==> add 2x to both sides

5x + 17 = - 13

==> subtract 17 from both sides

5x = -30

==> divide both sides by 5

x = -6
