Answer:

They were unreceptive and suspicious

Step-by-step explanation:

Africans were generally suspicious and not openly receptive of the Europeans as they sought to conquer and colonise them.

Using Nigeria as a case study, the British came to Nigeria and conquered her because of sophisticated weapons and knowledge which the locals lacked.

After subduing the South Eastern part of Nigeria, the British faced a new dilemma, they could not communicate with the locals because of language barrier so they took some locals and taught them English, sent them to schools and when they became proficient in the language, they were used as interpreters.

The next step the British took was to alter the religion of the people and introduced Christianity. The people in Eastern Nigeria refused to convert and the few converts were mocked by their peers. But when the locals saw the benefits the converts and literate were enjoying from the white man, more people converted and started attending the schools.
