A rectangle has a length 6 m less than twice its width. When 3 m are added to the width, the resulting figure is a square with an area of 144 m2. Find the dimensions

of the original rectangle.

Answer:

Original width = 9m and original length = 12m

Explanation:

Let original width be
w and original length be
l.

According to question statement:


l = 2 * w -6 ...... (1)

When 3m added to width, the resulting figure becomes square with area 144
m^(2), also area of a square =
side^(2)


\Rightarrow (w+3)^(2) = 144\\\Rightarrow (w+3) = 12\\\Rightarrow w = 9m

Putting value of
w in equation (1):


\Rightarrow l = 2 * 9 - 6\\\Rightarrow l = 12m

Hence, original dimensions of rectangle are:

Length = 12m

Width = 9m
