Why were ironclads so effective in battle?

Think about it. Their sides were made out of pure iron. Cannon balls literally bounced off the sides. The ship is nigh invincible. Doesn't mean they can't be destroyed. But yes.. Their cannons plus armor made them a force to be reckoned with.
