Explanation:

assuming the triangle is right.

using Pythagoras' identity

(x + 2)² = x² + 4²

x² + 4x + 4 = x² + 16 ( subtract x² from both sides )

4x + 4 = 16 ( subtract 4 from both sides )

4x = 12 ( divide both sides by 4 )

x = 3
