When the quantity of the sum of 5 times a number and 7 is decreased by 1, the result is 1 more than 6 times the number.

What is the equation that models the verbal description, and what is the number?
A. 5n + 7 – 1 = 6n + 1; n = 5
B. 5n(7 + 1) = 6n + 1; n = 7
C. 7(5n – 1) = 6n – 1; n = 5
D. 5n + 7 – 1 = 6n + 1; n = 31

Answer:

A. 5n + 7 – 1 = 6n + 1; n = 5

Explanation:

Quantity is just an amount.

Sum means adding.

Decreased by one means you take away 1.

"the result is" is an equals sign = in an equation.

If you already have an equal sign than the phrase "more than" will also mean adding.

5n + 7 – 1 = 6n + 1 to solve, combine like terms and get the n on one side of the equation

5n + 6 = 6n + 1 Subtract 5n

6 = n + 1 Subtract 1

5 = n

D is wrong bc the n is not 31. n=31 is false.
