Property 1: When a number is added or subtracted to both sides of equality, equality remains.

Property 2: When multiplied or divided by the same number, other than zero, on both sides of equality, equality remains.

Property 3: When both members of equality are raised to a nonzero power, equality remains.

Property 4: When the same root is extracted, on both sides of the equality, equality remains.

In other words, property 1 is used in part a and property 2 is used in part b.
