A student was driving to school at 50 mph. A quarter of the way there he ran out of gas. If he ran the rest of the way at 10 mph what was his average speed? Please explain as well.

Should be 40mph average

Explanation:

If a student was driving 50mph a quarter of the way there, then 10mph the rest, that means that you can divide the drive like this. You have 4 parts of the drive, 3 of which are being drived at 50mph and the other at 10mph. You have to find the average using this equation.

(50+50+50+10)/4

160/4=40
