Miss Havisham was left on the altar on her wedding day by a conman who also stole her fortune. Pip is urged by Miss Havisham to fall in love with her adopted daughter Estrella who clearly hates Pip as a form of revenge for her bad experience in the past.

From the appearance of Miss Havisham, Pip is deeply concerned, surprised and sympathetic towards her as he knew how white her skin was and how full her hips were in comparison to how withered and dried she now looked.
