Answer: XP is autosomal recessive, with at least nine specific mutations able to result in the condition. Normally, the damage to DNA which occurs in skin cells from exposure to UV light is repaired by nucleotide excision repair. In people with xeroderma pigmentosum, this damage is not repaired.

Xeroderma pigmentosum is caused by mutations in genes that are involved in repairing damaged DNA . Inherited mutations in at least nine genes have been identified. The condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. People with XP need total protection from sunlight.XP is an autosomal recessive genetic condition caused by alterations (mutations) in nine different genes. Eight of the genes make up the nucleotide excision repair pathway (NER) that identities and repairs UV induced DNA damage. One of the most frequent defects in xeroderma pigmentosum is an autosomal recessive genetic defect in which nucleotide excision repair (NER) enzymes are mutated, leading to a reduction in or elimination of NER. If left unchecked, damage caused by ultraviolet light can cause mutations in individual cell's DNA. A child presenting with severe sunburn after their first exposure to sun may be a clue to the diagnosis of xeroderma pigmentosum. Xeroderma pigmentosum can usually be conclusively diagnosed by measuring the DNA repair factor from skin or blood samples.
