How did the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake cause so much damage if it occurred in the middle of the Indian Ocean? The earthquake produced a tsunami that caused the destruction. It didn't cause a lot of damage because it was in the ocean. Much marine life was killed. Many sailors and fishermen were killed.
