Explanation:

X-Y=1 (add Y on both sides to cancel it out)

X=1+Y (now we pug in this for the next equation)

X+Y=27 is now (1+Y)+Y=27

1+Y+Y=27 (Combine like terms)

1+2Y=27 (Subtract 1 on both sides to cancel it out)

2Y=26 (Divide by 2 on both sides to cancel it out)

Y=13 (Now we plug it into the another equation)

X + Y = 27 is now X + 13 = 27

X+13=27 (subtract 13 on both sides)

X=14
