Explanation:

You can use an algebraic equation to solve this.

If the width is w then the length L = 2*w.

The perimeter = 2 * the width + 2 * length , so

138 = 2*w + 2 * L

138 = 2*w + 2 * 2w

138 = 2w + 4w

138 = 6w

138/6 = w

23 = w.

So the width = 23 and the length = 2*23 = 46.

Ok so since to work out the perimeter of a rectangle you times all 4 sides and the length is two times the width you divide 138 by 3 and then by two which is:
138/3=46
46/2=23 = length
So since the width is 2x the length you times it by two:
23 x 2 = 46
And to check this is correct:
46+46+23+23= 138
:)
