A well obtains water from groundwater, which is a part of the water cycle that occurs beneath the Earth's surface. Groundwater is the water that percolates down through the soil and into the rocks and sediment beneath the Earth's surface, where it is stored in porous and permeable underground layers called aquifers. As the water moves through the aquifers, it can be accessed through wells drilled into the rock formations. So, wells obtain water from the stage of the water cycle that involves groundwater recharge and storage in aquifers.
