What were pros and cons of utilizing barrel vaults in Roman architecture?

Pros: Added aesthetic appeal; gives extra height to a room; had good flexibility when compared to other decorative ceilings; simplest form of a vault, as it is basically just arches placed side by side

Cons: has to be buttressed the entire length due to outward thrust; large windows cannot be used, so they were often poorly lit; most had poor circulation; some collapsed due to the heavy semi-circle arch that put pressure on the lower parts of the vaults and walls
