Age of George = (x/2) years

Age of Bill = x - 6

Their total age = 39 years

x + (x/2) + x - 6 = 39


x+(x)/(2)+x=39+6\\\\2x+(x)/(2)=45\\\\(2x*2)/(2)+(x)/(2)=45\\\\(4x)/(2)+(x)/(2)=45\\\\(4x+x)/(2)=45\\\\(5x)/(2)=45\\\\x=(45*2)/(5)\\\\x=9*2

x = 18 years
