A number’s additive inverse is the number that you would add to it to get zero as the sum. If a number is positive, its additive inverse is negative, and if a number is negative, its additive inverse is positive. A number’s additive inverse is also known as its opposite. On a number line, a number’s additive inverse is in the opposite position. It’s the same number of units away from zero on the opposite side of zero. -3 and 3 are additive inverses.
