Well...I think you are talking about breaking words down into syllables..and if you are then; Syllables have a significant role in spoken English, because they greatly affect the rhythm of the language, its poetic meter and its stress patterns.

Example:

Remember the silent letters in a word such as Wednesday. We say “wens day” but spell it Wed-nes-day.
