x = 3a + 1

Explanation:

2 ^ (4x - 1) = 8 ^ (x + a)

2 ^ (4x - 1) = (2^ 3) ^(x + a)

2 ^ (4x - 1) = (2^ (3(x + a))

ok

4x - 1 = 3(x + a)

so

4x = 3x + 3a + 1

x = 3a + 1
