3x + 4y = -2

2x - 4y = -8

5x = -10

5x/5 = -10/5

x = -2

Why: Using the elimination method, you can eliminate 4y and -4y since they are opposites. Then its an addition problem; 3x plus 2x is 5x. -2 plus -8 is -10. From there it's "junk and divide"

Finding Y:

2(-2) - 4y = -8

-4 -4y = -8

+4 +4

-4y = -4
