The y value for any point on the x axis is 0, so substitute 0 for y. Rewrite the equation with the left side in the form x2 + bx, to prepare to complete the square. Add to the left side to complete the square, and also to the right side so the equation is still true. Rewrite the left side as a binomial squared.
