Read each paragraph to compare each writer’s word choice. Write a paragraph in which you will discuss the following:

How each writer’s feelings about the bird eating spider is shown by their word choice
Examples of words each writer uses to show his/her feelings
The overall tone or sound of each paragraph based on the connotation of the words used
The author’s purpose in each paragraph (Whether or not the paragraph is written to persuade or to inform)
Your response must be at least 120 words or more, and each sentence in your paragraph must begin with an upper-case letter. The response must also focus on all bullet points.

Paragraph 1 Goliath bird-eating spider

Goliath bird-eating spiders are tarantulas of epic proportions. Biggest by mass and coming very close to the giant huntsman for the title of largest spider in the world. As their name suggests, Goliath bird-eaters are certainly big enough to eat a bird, although they rarely do, preferring smaller insects and invertebrates. Interestingly, it was a Victorian explorer who first reported these giant spiders and witnessed one eating a hummingbird. Like most tarantulas. Goliath bird-eaters are fairly harmless to humans. They only attack when threatened and their bite is no worse than the sting of a wasp. They live in deep burrows in the rain forests of northern South America.

Paragraph 2 Goliath bird-eating spider

The bird-eating spider is an absolutely nightmarish creature and one that the world could probably do without. Since there are over 600 species of these hand-sized monsters, the poor birds in the Amazon don’t have a chance! The hairy beast grabs tiny humming-birds from their nests, injects them with a kind of acid that turns their insides into liquid, and then sucks their guts out. Ugh! Can you imagine what it feels like to have your insides slowly being digested while you are still alive?
