The picture is basically showing us the nuclei and the way they move. The wispy tails behind them serve to imply great speed. We can also see, from the way they are disposed, that the nuclei move in different directions.

The passage, in its turn, serves to explain how and why they fuse. The nuclei, in their frenzy, end up colliding, slamming into one another. They fuse when they push through other nuclei's force fields.
