Explanation:

You have a quantity of four tenths. You are breaking it down into groups of eight hundredths. How many groups can you make?

Remember that 4 tenths is the same as 40 hundredths, so the problem can be restated as 40 (hundredths) divided by 8 (hundredths)

40 ÷ 8 = 5

For the model, make 10 columns. Shade or color 4 of them to show 4/10.

Measure a unit that is 8/100 wide, and mark that off.

Count how many sections are marked off. Circle or alternately shade them.

I used a centimeter ruler, so each centimeter represents one tenth, each millimeter represents one hundredth.

As you mark off the increments of 8 (multiples: 8,16,24,32,40) that fills and divides the space between 0 and 4 tenths with 5 widths of 8/100.
