Answer:

Holden replied that "A million reason why. It was one of the worst schools i ever went to. It was full of phonies and mean guys. You never saw so many mean guys in your life".

Step-by-step explanation:

The above was the reply Holden gave to Phoebe in " The Catcher in the Rye" by Salinger, about why he got axed from another school.I don't think he is being truthful because He started with " oh, God, Phoebe, don't ask me. I am sick of everybody asking me that". so i don't think with this response he is being truthful to phoebe because he doesn't according to Phoebe like anything anywhere. and when phoebe asks him what he wants, He says he likes the boy at Elkton hills by name James Castle who had a fight with a conceited guy named Phil Stable, says he wants to be the catcher in the rye by saving little children from falling off the cliff. The rye field symbolizes childhood.

Holden wants to be a savior of the innocence protecting them from falling off the cliff into adulthood. He tells Phoebe about how he likes the nuns at grand central. Holden seems confused throughout the novel.

Answer:

it was because he thought that everyone was a phony at school

No

Step-by-step explanation:

Holden characterizes “phonies” as people who are dishonest or fake about who they really are, or people who play a part just to fit into a society that Holden questions. Therefore, Holden hates “phonies” because they represent everything he fears or fights against, such as adulthood, conformity, and commercialism. He describes this hatred when he says, “You never saw so many phonies in all your life, everybody smoking their ears off and talking about the play so that everybody could hear and know how sharp they were. . . . You should’ve seen the way they said hello. . . . It was nauseating. The funny part was, they probably met each other just once, at some phony party.” Everywhere Holden goes, he distrusts the insincere intentions and phony actions of his peers as they navigate adulthood and try to fit into society’s expectations.
