\sqrt{(x1 - x2)^(2)+(y1 - y2)^(2) }

the x1, x2, y1 and y2 refer to the numbers in the coordinates.

(12,5) (-12, -2)

the x1 refers to the x coordinate in the first bracket. the x2 refers to the x coordinate in the second bracket, etc.

double negatives equal positives
