we want to split this triangle into two different triangles, triangle 1 will have verticies (0,0) (3,8) and (3,0). Triangle 2 will have verticies (3,0) (3,8) and (9,0).

next we want to find the area of each of the triangles using the formula 1/2(base)(height)

Once you do this its just a matter of adding the two areas together.

1/2(3)(8)+1/2(6)(8)=12+24=36
