Answer:

The car traveled 16 miles per gallon in the city

Explanation:

Speed in highway = a miles per gallon

Speed in city = b miles per gallon

The car covers a miles with 1 gallon of fuel in the highway

It will cover 462 miles with 462/a gallons of fuel in the highway

The car covers b miles with 1 gallon of fuel in the city

It will cover 336 miles with 336/b gallons of fuel in the city

The car traveled 6 fewer miles per gallon in the city than on the highway

b = a - 6

Since the speed does not change with the fuel capacity of the car

462/a = 336/b

But b = a -6

462/a = 336/(a-6)

462(a-6) = 336a

462a - 2772 = 336a

462a - 336a = 2772

126a = 2772

a = 2772/126

a = 22 miles per gallon

The car travel 22 miles per gallon in the highway

In the city, b = a -6

b = 22 -6

b = 16 miles per gallon

The car traveled 16 miles per gallon in the city
