The set {3, x, 2, 1} has a range of 2. What is the value of x?

Answer:

x = 1 or x = 2 or x = 3

Explanation:

The range = 2 = (greatest number in the set) - (lowest number in the set)

→ If we took x < 1 then the range would be 3 - x > 3 - 1 then 3 - x > 2 which is impossible ,therefore x could not be less than 1

→ If we took x > 3 then the range would be x - 1 > 3 - 1 then x - 1 > 2 which is impossible ,therefore x could not be higher than 3

Conclusion:

1 ≤ x ≤ 3

then

x = 1 or x = 2 or x = 3
