Answer:

Cholesterol is produced by the liver and also made by most cells in the body. It is carried around in the blood by little 'couriers' called lipoproteins. We need a small amount of blood cholesterol because the body uses it to: build the structure of cell membranes

Cholesterol is a sterol (a combination of steroid and alcohol) and a lipid found in the cell membranes of all body tissues and transported in the blood plasma of all animals. The name originates from the Greek chole- (bile) and stereos (solid), and the chemical suffix -ol for alcohol.
