I think of a number . If I subtract six from it and multiply the difference by 4 the result is 36. Evaluate the number that I thought of.

First we can make an equation by replacing the unknown number with x :

First step of problem:

x-6

Second part of problem:

4(x-6)

Third part of the problem:

4(x-6)=36

First we can expand the bracket to give us:

4x-24=36

Now we add 24 to both sides:

4x = 60

Now we divide both sides by 4 for our final answer of

x= 15

To check this answer we can put it back into the problem:

4(15-6)=36

4(9)=36

Therefore our answer that was thought was 15.
