Two skaters all racing toward the finish line of a race the first skater has for team lead and is traveling at a rate of 12 meters per second the second skater is traveling at a rate of 14 meters per second how long will it take for the second skater to past the first skater

Explanation:

Given that the speed of the two skaters to be

S1 = 12 m/s

S2 = 14 m/s

Since it is a race, the distance covered will be the same. But of different time.

First Skater

Speed = distance/time

Let's assume that the distance covered when the second overtakes the first is d

12 = d/t1

d = 12t1

Since the time of both skaters are not given, let us assume that distance where the second skater overtakes the first is 4 metres. Therefore

t1 = 4/12 = 0.3333 second

Second skater

Speed = distance/ time

14 = 12t1/t2

t2 = 12t1/14

t2 = 0.86 t1

t2 = 0.86(0.333)

0.286 seconds
