Why does mold show in different colors?

Some molds secrete pigment known as melanin that can act as a barrier to protect them against other rival molds. Other studies indicate that the color of this particular fungi comes from its food source, genus, conditions under which it grows and it's age

Im not exactly sure about this question but I would say that it would depend on the mold and what caused it.
Different colors of mold can mean different things I think.
Such as black and green mold, which can cause cancer!
I think different colors also could tell how long it’s been molding for.
(Like the different stages)
