Ryan bought several pens at Staples, for 60 cents each. Spending the same amount of money at Rite Aid, Ryan then bought some pens that cost 80 cents each. In all, 42 pens were bought. How many pens did Ryan buy at Rite Aid?

Answer:

24 Pens For Staples and 18 For Raid Aids

Explanation:

Ryan spent the same amount of money on both brands

In total, he had bought 42 pens.

So, I have to make a graph and find out at what point did they gain the same amount of money.

Staples: [s]

.60s (This would be the equation for Staples)

Rite Aid: [r]

.80r (This would be for Rite Aid)

Staples Rite Aid

x | y x | y

1 | .60 1 | .80

2 | 1.2 2 | 1.6

3 | 1.8 3 | 2.4

4 | 2.4 4 | 3.2

5 | 3.0 5 | 4.0

At 4 pens Staples reach $2.4, while at 3 pens, Rite Aid got $2.4

So then he would have bought 7 pens. But we're looking for 42, which is 6x this amount.

Since the amount of is 6x more, I'll multiply each of the amount of pens by 6.

6(4) = 24 Pens at Staples

6(3) = 18 Peans at Raid Aids

In totals they have 42 pens, but we have to check if they reach the same price.

.60(24) = $ 14.4

.80(18) = $ 14.4

We can now reach to a conclusion that these two amounts are correct.

The amount of pens he bought from each brand(s) are:

Staple: 24 Pens

Raid Aids: 18 Pens

(Sorry I took a while, I was trying to make the graph and stuff!)
