When the United States got into the war, FDR authorised the Manhattan project (the secret project to create the atomic bomb) after there were reports that the Germans were making weapons of mass destruction of their own. After Germany was defeated, FDR died in April of 1945. Vice president Truman (who became president after FDR died) authorised the atomic bomb to be dropped on Japan on August 6 1945 on Hiroshima, then another in August 9 1945 on Nagasaki
