mammals excrete nitrogenous waste primarily as urea, which is water-soluble, in liquid urine. Birds and reptiles excrete it primarily as solid uric acid, which is not water soluble. How could this possibly be adaptive, given that it takes more energy to convert excess nitrogen into uric acid than it does to produce urea
