Using the laws of surds, we know that

√a × √b = √ab

and

a√b = √a² × √b

As such,

√50 = √2 × √25 (since 2 × 25 = 50)

= √2 × 5

= 5√2

= 5 × 1.414 where √2 = 1.414

= 7.07

≈ 7.1 to the nearest tenth
