What was some of the new technology of World War I? Why was this war so much deadlier than previous wars?

World War I was a turning point in modern warfare technology. Most importantly, the use of the plane was used. They were modified to have machine guns posted on them- something that had never happened before. Tanks were invented by the British, but never used due to their constant issues. Perhaps most devastatingly, the use of poison gas was invented. Other weapons, like machine guns and heavy artillery, were modified and improved. With all this new technology, people didn't have systems in place yet to protect themselves. Sometimes, inventions are fantastic...but in World War I, it served to make wars more devastating.
