A large part of the American Revolution deals with taxing of the colonist. Why do you think it was such a big deal then, yet today everything in our society is taxed?

Answer:

I think that back then everyone wanted everything for free. During colonist times, American colonists wanted military protections from the British without actually paying for it. They just wanted the handout. Nowadays, people work hard to pay for the services the government provides. All of those taxes we pay are going to pay for the things we demands from our government. But we don't just want to leech the system, so we actually pay into it. (Well, that is except for the very wealthy. They buy stocks and never actually do any physical labor. Then they lobby the government to give them everything they want and they hire tax lawyers to help them avoid actually paying their taxes.) But I digress... The obvious correct answer is that the colonists were lazy, selfish, drains on society who wanted military protections without actually paying for it.
