Question:

How is the African continent diverse? Summarize this continent's diversity in terms of its languages, religions, and cultural

influences.

Answer:

Africa is diverse in it's inhabitants, history both political and social, and geography. The continent is massive and covers all four hemispheres. As the site of the "birthplace of humanity", and many of the world's treasured minerals occur here, Africa provides economic opportunity found in few other places. Northern Africa has rich landscape in the Fertile Crescent of Earth, the Sahara is historically the home of many now endangered animals. England, France, Spain, and most other developed nations have colonized Africa in some way, including the United States, in it's own unique way. (See: The Poisonwood Bible) Tribal and foreign languages are equally common, as colonization and immigration are wide-spread. Geographically, the "borders" within Africa are arbitrary and have lead to Tribal conflict, perpetuating the notion that African tribes are barbaric, savagely, or lesser humans. These borders were imposed by immigrants from Europe. Trade and commerce in Africa keeps economy growing, but only in ways that benefit more-developed countries.

There are more than 50 countries on the African continent. The continent has over 3,000 culture groups, and these groups speak over 800 languages. Africa is home to many religions; in addition to traditional African religions, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism are practiced. Africa has many external cultural influences. African cultures have been influenced by European, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian cultures.
