Tom Robinson is characterized by the Ewells as a person of no value or no feelings but he is characterized by Harper Lee as a mockingbird (an innocent person). Examples would be how the Ewells won the case just because they were white despite there being no evidence of Tom raping Mayella. When Tom dies is another example because he was shot even though he was innocent. And the third example could be like Atticus's relationship with Tom, he gives his best effort to save Tom, an innocent man who has values too.

Tom Robinson is essentially the symbol of a mockingbird. He is kind and attempts to bring a little kindness to Mayella Ewell who is suffering. The Ewells, Bob Ewell in particular, brings nothing but hate, ignorance and sadness to everyone. He is essentially the opposite of Tom. He even abuses his daughter in the worst possible way.
