YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ALL OF THEM JUST ONE IS FINE

1. Mr. Myrna can't understand why lecturing and scolding his freshmen students for disruptive classroom behaviors makes them even more unruly. Explain Mr. Myrna's predicament in terms of operant conditioning principles. Show how he could use operant conditioning techniques to (a) reduce disruptive behaviors and (b) increase cooperative behaviors.

2. Alisha smokes cigarettes to reduce her feelings of tension and anxiety. Because of her continuous heavy smoking, she has a bad cough when she wakes up in the morning and breathing difficulties. How can the principles of operant conditioning help to explain the development and continuation of Alisha's self-defeating smoking habit? Explain the extent to which the reinforcement for Alisha's habit is positive or negative, primary or conditioned, immediate or delayed, partial or continuous.

3. Although Ms. Jula often tells her children about the importance of donating time and money to charities and those in need, she rarely does so herself. She believes that this hypocrisy will not rub off on her son and daughters, as long as she has plausible excuses for her lack of charity (not enough money or time, charity will abuse the funds, etc). Use your understanding of learning processes to explain how Ms. Jula's children are likely to be affected by their mother's behavior. What advice would you give to Ms. Jula?

Answer:

Children are very easily influenced. They look to their parents as examples. Ms. Jula should practice what she preaches. No matter how often she says donating is important, if her children see that it's not important enough for her to do it, they won't feel compelled to do it when they get older.
