Natural selection is a central concept of evolution. Natural selection is the process where organisms with favorable traits are more likely to reproduce. In doing so, they pass on these traits to the next generation. Over this time this process allows organisms to adapt to their environment.

I learned about this in the 8th grade! Let me share with you what I know!!

Natural selection is the process that enables adaptation and speciation by advancing new traits throughout a population of organisms.

Reproduction is at the core of natural selection because that is how genes are passed along to the next generation. However, survival is important; the better an individual survives, the more it will reproduce, and the more its new beneficial trait will be passed along.

More simple way to put it:

Natural selection relies on reproductive advantages.

If a mutation grants a reproductive advantage to its carrier, chances are his genes will be passed on more often to the future generations.
